In the previous parts, we discussed protecting your pet’s health, grooming, and proper nutrition—but becoming a good dog owner doesn’t end there!
IV. Make Sure Your Pet Gets Enough Exercise!

1. Walk your dog several times every day!
Dogs—just like humans—need daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. However, exercise requirements can vary greatly and often depend on the breed. Some dogs are perfectly content with a short walk around the neighborhood, while others need at least an hour of intensive walking or even several kilometers of running.
Take your dog’s breed, energy level, and health condition into account when deciding how often and for how long to go on walks. In the intense summer heat, only early-morning exercise can be more demanding; all other outings should be short, health-related walks.
2. Play with your pet!
Since many dogs today can no longer do the jobs they were originally bred for—such as hunting, digging, or working—it is especially important to play with them every day to prevent the development of destructive behaviors.
Play tug-of-war, frisbee, or other interactive games with your dog outdoors every day. Dogs need mental stimulation just as much as physical activity, so they should be “tired out” in both ways to prevent boredom.
3. Give your pet plenty of opportunities to be outdoors!
In addition to daily walks and playtime, spending more time outdoors in the fresh air throughout the day can have a very positive effect on your pet. A fenced yard, for example, is ideal for allowing your dog to move around freely and explore its own boundaries.
If you let your dog outside on its own, make sure that both your dog and your belongings are safe. In warm weather, always ensure your dog has access to shade and plenty of fresh water while outdoors.
