Dr. Szalay János

Childhood and career choice

My name is Dr. János Szalay, and I am a veterinarian based in Szeged. I decided to become a veterinarian at the age of ten, following the example set by my great-grandfather and my father.

Education and early career

I graduated in 1987 from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest. I completed my practical training years at the Animal Hospital in Hódmezővásárhely, where my grandfather also worked. In 1990, I spent one year working as an independent district veterinarian in a rural mixed practice.

Establishment of the Szeged Kisállat Ambulance

At the end of 1991, I joined the small animal practice in Szeged at the Small Animal Ambulance upon the invitation of my colleague Dr. Antal Rengei. A few years later, Dr. László Perényi also joined our team.
In 2000, I obtained my specialist diploma in small animal medicine, and by 2001 we established our independent veterinary clinic in Szeged, where we continue to work together to this day.

Areas of expertise

My professional work focuses on the treatment of companion animals. My main areas of expertise include internal medicine and endocrinology, surgery and obstetrics, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, X-ray, laboratory diagnostics), dietetics, and the management of behavioral and socialization issues.

Professional Commitment

I am passionate about preserving Hungarian dog breeds and previously worked extensively with the Mudi breed, achieving successful results at several dog shows. I am a founding member of the Hungarian Small Animal Orthopedic Association and the Small Animal Dietetics Association.

Public and professional engagement

I am currently serving my fourth term as President of the Csongrád County Organization of the Hungarian Chamber of Veterinarians and my third term as a member of the national board. Through these roles, I strive to strengthen cooperation between veterinarians and pet owners.

Professional philosophy

I am committed to practicing veterinary medicine that is scientifically grounded and focused on high-quality treatment and prevention. I consider it essential to protect the health of domestic and wild animals, preserve their natural habitats, and contribute to the physical and mental well-being of people.

Our mission at the clinic

The mission of our veterinary clinic is to ensure that pet owners who turn to us are satisfied and that their pets always receive the highest standard of care — with full respect for their health and natural needs.
