Birch Sugar (Xylitol) Poisoning

As part of a healthy lifestyle, natural sweeteners have become increasingly popular. One of the most commonly used is birch sugar, also known as xylitol, which many people use to sweeten foods and drinks. However, it is very important to understand that what is healthy for us is not necessarily safe for our pets.

No matter how sweetly our pets look at us or how much they “beg” for a bite of our food, NEVER give them anything containing birch sugar (xylitol). In dogs and ferrets, xylitol can cause severe poisoning, which in the majority of cases can unfortunately be fatal.

Please pay close attention to your pet and only feed them food that is appropriate for their species and needs. If you notice anything unusual, or if you need advice on proper nutrition, contact our veterinarians in Szeged.
We warmly welcome you and your pet at Kisállat-Ambulancia!
