Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease. The definitive host is the cat (and other felines), while intermediate hosts include warm-blooded animals and humans. Animals can become infected by eating contaminated raw meat, or through contact with cat feces.
For humans, the main risks are undercooked meat and poor kitchen hygiene (handling raw meat and vegetables without proper hygiene measures).
In people, toxoplasmosis usually causes mild, flu-like symptoms, but it poses a much greater risk if the infection is acquired during pregnancy or in individuals with a weakened immune system. In cats, it is most commonly associated with inflammatory eye lesions.
