How to Be a Good Dog Owner? Part 1: Protect Your Pet’s Health

Anyone who chooses to have a dog is, in the best case, choosing a companion for 13–15 years—a loyal partner who watches your every move, responds to it, and gives 100% unconditional love, without expectations or conditions.
However, respect must be earned. In every pack there is a leader—and that leader must always be you.

Meeting all of your dog’s needs requires constant attention and effort, but it is absolutely worth it. If you want to be a good dog owner, here are a few simple but essential principles to follow. They require time and patience, but your dog will reward you with good behavior, affection, and trust—laying the foundation for a long, happy, and balanced relationship. 🙂

First of All…

Prepare and learn before choosing a puppy!

Before bringing a puppy home, take time to learn about the adult size, nutritional needs, activity level, and exercise requirements of the chosen breed. Only decide to get a dog if you are truly able to meet these needs.

Sometimes our lifestyle simply does not allow responsible dog ownership—and that’s okay. In some cases, a cat or even a reptile may better suit one’s way of life.
It is highly recommended to contact your future veterinarian in advance and discuss your plans before making a final decision.

I. Protect Your Pet’s Health!

Take your dog for veterinary check-ups every six months

Regular veterinary examinations are essential for maintaining your dog’s health. Responsible owners take their dogs for a check-up at least twice a year, as dogs age much faster than humans—six months for them equals roughly three years for us.

In the case of puppies, veterinary visits will be even more frequent after adoption, primarily due to the necessary vaccination schedule.

Ideally, visit the veterinarian on the very day you bring your puppy home, so you do not introduce external or internal parasites into your household and can assess your new companion’s health right away. You will also receive valuable advice on feeding, vaccinations, and parasite prevention.

Always observe your dog closely. If you notice any changes—illness, altered behavior, loss of appetite—schedule a veterinary appointment as soon as possible. Early intervention is the best way to understand what is happening and to help your pet in time.

2. Never neglect protection against ticks, fleas, and heartworm

Preventive treatments against ticks, fleas, and heartworm disease are essential to protect your dog from serious but preventable health problems.

Always use the product recommended by your veterinarian, at the correct dosage and with the proper frequency. Incorrect use can reduce effectiveness and put your pet at risk.

3. Have your pet neutered or spayed

Neutering helps prevent overpopulation and has several important health and behavioral benefits.

Male dogs:
Neutering reduces roaming behavior, eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, decreases hormone-related frustration during mating seasons (making walks much easier), and significantly lowers the risk of prostate disease.

Female dogs:
Spaying reduces stress and inconvenience during heat cycles (for both dog and owner), completely eliminates the risk of pyometra (uterine infection), and—when performed at a young age—significantly lowers the risk of mammary tumors.

4. Microchip your dog!

By law, puppies must be microchipped before being transferred to a new owner. Beyond legal requirements, a microchip combined with an ID tag on the collar is the fastest and most reliable way to reunite you with your dog if they get lost—or the only proof of ownership if they are stolen.

Many owners are deeply grateful when a lost dog is quickly returned thanks to a microchip.
An ID tag should include your dog’s name, your address, and your phone number.
