How to Be a Good Dog Owner? Part 5: Train Your Pet!

There are many things to keep in mind if we want to be good dog owners. We must protect our dogs’ health, groom them properly, feed them correctly, and ensure they get enough exercise. Now let’s look at the next essential piece of advice.

V. Train Your Pet!

For teaching and socializing a puppy, a puppy kindergarten (dog nursery) can provide an excellent foundation, where both the pet and the owner learn together. This usually begins as soon as the puppy comes to its new home. Of course, it is preceded by everything the puppy has already learned at its place of birth—from its mother, littermates, and the original breeder—and later continues in dog school.

One thing is certain: learning is important for both the owner and the dog, and it is a vital part of mental stimulation.

1. Consider enrolling your pet in an obedience course!

Good dog owners invest time and energy in learning to “speak their dog’s language” and teaching them the behaviors we expect. Early socialization during puppyhood is crucial, and later on, a basic obedience course can be very helpful so your dog learns the rules of living together (and of course commands like “sit,” “stand,” “down,” etc.).

This also helps you build a stronger bond with your dog, which has a positive effect on both of you.

2. Train your pet frequently, in short sessions

For the best results, train for short periods at a time, but repeat these sessions regularly every day. One effective method is to practice a behavior—such as sitting on command—5–15 times, then move on to another action, and then another.

Spend about 15 minutes a day on these repetitions. Short sessions help maintain your dog’s attention, while regular practice strengthens the learning process.

3. Use positive reinforcement

When teaching your pet something new, it is very important to reward them immediately when they do it correctly. For example, if you want your dog to sit, praise and reward them as soon as they sit down. This way, they understand that they did something right and that this is the behavior you expect.

4. Stop unwanted behavior!

Teach your pet to stop inappropriate behavior. For example, if you are about to go for a walk and your dog jumps on you, ignore the behavior and wait until the dog stops. As soon as it does, put on the leash and start the walk.

Repeat this until your dog understands that jumping does not lead to going for a walk, but standing calmly does.

Never yell at your dog for misbehaving, as punishment can sometimes make the situation worse.
