“Animal” Stories from Around the World – Part I

One of our kind pet owners shared the following story with us:

“Last summer, my daughter and I planned a holiday with our dog to a beautiful spot along the Croatian coast. It was truly a dog-friendly place in every sense—when it came to infrastructure, services, and experiences alike.

One morning while we were sunbathing, a small Yorkshire Terrier got its leg stuck between the bars of a neighboring sunbed. The poor dog started screaming in pain. My Beagle, Haiti, who was lying next to my sunbed, got so frightened by the noise that he suddenly took off, running straight up the rocky shoreline. Honestly, I don’t think even a mountain goat could have climbed that well.

By the time the Yorkie’s leg was freed, my daughter and I were already running after Haiti in total panic—or at least as much as one can run with a sore knee and having to take a detour toward the stairs. I suddenly realized that beyond the top of the rocks there was only a narrow safety strip, and after that… a road. He absolutely couldn’t get that far.

Luckily, the command “Haiti – come!” had worked well before, so that was our last hope. Shouting over the noise of the beach, after several desperate calls of “Haiti – come!”, it finally worked. Haiti froze, turned back toward us, and although clearly confused, stayed where he was and waited for us.

A huge weight lifted off my heart when I finally had him back in my hands.

That’s when it hit me: during the frantic chase after the dog, all the money we had brought for the holiday—along with our documents—had been left completely unattended in my bag next to the sunbed. That was my second extremely stressful few minutes that morning, which, looking back, I would gladly have skipped altogether…”
